"When are you chatting with Haim?" a text pops up. "I wanted to ask if I can become their extra sister."

However, there remains a single issue: The author likewise longs to be Haim's additional sibling. And we're not alone. Several high-profile supporters have publicly coveted the position.

It's clear an irresistible appeal is happening. Sisters Este, Danielle and Alana started their career performing shows at neighborhood delis with their parents. Presently, they stand as multi-time Grammy nominees.

Like all the greatest bands, they're a close gang. Their visuals often depict them marching in harmony down the streets of Los Angeles. In concert, they play with such boundless joy you inevitably think, "I want to be part of that, too."

"The numerous instances on tour that audience members approached us and said, 'After your show, I picked up a guitar'," states Alana, the most junior of the sisters. "It is the ultimate compliment. That's an award in itself. Our mission is accomplished if we can encourage young girls to start a band."

"So anyone gets an invitation to be the honorary part of the family."

Grammy Recognition

The group have called into a break, where they're recovering after an major tour in promoting their fourth album, I Quit.

They're currently celebrating the news it's been nominated for Best Rock Album at the Grammys – with Haim the very first all-female band ever in the running for the prize.

"I watch the lists every year, so it sort of feels like The Truman Show when your name is called," explains Alana. "I had to call my sisters to say, 'Did we just hear this correctly or am I dreaming'?"

The importance of the nomination is deeply felt by the trio.

"We deliberately set out to make a rock record this time, so it's a major step," adds Alana. "However we're just thankful for the pioneers that came before us."

Heartbreak and Humour

The album emerged from a phase of personal change. All three sisters were single, and the music captures that strange liminal space where you're relieved to be free, but not yet ready to let go.

The lyrics track breakups and partings. The sisters seek love, but not the kind of love they've experienced. You can hear them working out in the moment who they aspire to be.

"I love description, yes," responds Danielle. "I Quit is like a slogan. You have to actively work on ignoring the outside opinions and saying, 'I don't give what people think'."

Refinement of Sound

That recent confidence called for a new sound – more unpolished and immediate than anything the band had done before.

For Danielle, who helped produce the album, that was founded on the drum sound.

"The drum sound is such a nuanced thing, and I focus so intensely about it," she states.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the name of our book," quips Alana. "Our motto is, our albums won't commence until we find the right drum sound."

Stories and Collective Laughter

The band's honesty inspired the album's rollout, where the sisters disclosed some of their personal misadventures.

One man ended things with Este over a medical consideration. Alana recalled a story of flying to spend New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a friendly slap at midnight.

"When you're going through these heartbreaks, you just feel like there's no light," explains Alana. "So to be able to find humor in those stories and hear others tell you more outrageous stories, it's therapeutic."

A Confident Future

You can clearly sense a evolution in the band. These days, Haim are more assured of their place in the music world.

They're major draws, with hit albums and an international fan base.

But the sister act will forever be their top focus.

"We have been playing music since I was four," concludes Alana. "It feels as if nothing else that we were supposed to do. And I'm really thankful we've gotten here and we're still going strong."
