Trump's Woke Warning Misses Europe's True Danger: Technological Decline.

Donald Trump's national security strategy offers a flawed assessment of Europe. The document asserts that unrestrained immigration and so-called "woke" agendas represent an existential risk to European civilization. Yet, this perspective is based on a fundamental misinterpretation of the situation. The actual challenge confronting the EU is not societal but technological and economic lag.

The Stark Economic Divide Separating Europe and the US

The data paint a stark contrast. From 2008 and 2023, American economic output grew by 87%, compared to a mere 13.5% increase for the EU. During this time, European income per person dropped from over three-quarters to just half of the US level. Remarkably, even the poorest US state now has a greater average income than major European economies like Italy and France.

Currently, about half of the global 50 largest tech companies are US-based, while only four are European.

The Technological Deficit: The Core Question

This widening disparity stems from stronger productivity growth in the United States, largely due to technological innovation and higher total factor productivity. The landscape of world technology dominance is overwhelmingly US-centric. In the last five decades, 241 US firms have grown into enterprises valued at more than $10bn, compared with only fourteen in the European continent.

This disparity raises a vital issue: As the competition for future industries like AI, semiconductors, and fusion energy, what is the EU stand? Experts widely agree it is largely a contest between two involving the US and China, with Europe entering at a clear disadvantage.

Root Causes of the Continent's Technological Lag

A number of major factors account for this innovation chasm.

  • Financing Ecosystem: The United States has a far deeper and more dynamic network for financing new ventures. Europe has yet to establish a genuine unified investment market, which caps the growth potential of new firms.
  • Regulatory Fragmentation: Excessive and fragmented rules hamper European business. A US startup can launch a product under one regulatory framework to access a consumer base of over 330 million. The European Union, despite a larger population size, is split among twenty-seven different national regimes, creating significant internal barriers.
  • Mindset Differences: Views on entrepreneurial failure differ sharply. In some EU nations, a startup's collapse was historically met with stigma, whereas in the US, it is often considered a valuable lesson.
  • Military Investment: The United States enjoys a tightly woven innovation pipeline linking defense and academia. Europe's chronic underinvestment in defense has weakened its capacity for pioneering research.

The Road Ahead: Reasons for Cautious Optimism

Despite these challenges, one can find causes for hope. Policymakers are increasingly aware of the severe threat and have started to advance substantial change. Notable analyses on EU competitiveness and the single market highlight the need for major reforms.

With the right policies and rule changes, these assets might enable much higher levels of business-led breakthroughs.

Europe retains significant advantages: high-quality workforce, excellent education systems, and world-class labs. Coupled with a vast domestic consumer base and high savings rates, these elements could unleash a surge of venture creation.

Importantly, even if the EU does not become the leader in creating next-generation technologies, it can still significantly boost economic output by adopting and adapting innovations from elsewhere.

A Critical Juncture

The European Union now faces a critical crossroads. To paraphrase a famous line, economic erosion often happens "gradually and then suddenly". So far, the continent's slide in innovation has been steady. However, if it fails to take bold steps to address its deep-seated problems, today's gradual weakening could give way to a sudden and irreversible loss of world influence.
